The Brain Gym® Program is a movement based-program effective for anyone anywhere. It can optimize learning and performance at every level. Specific physical movements play their important role in creating nerve cell networks which are actually the essence of learning. The key components, balance and coordination, assist in the development and functioning of the nervous system and neural pathways throughout the brain. Regular activation of the motor cortex elaborates nerve networks in the rest of the frontal lobe including our rational, executive-functioning cortex.
The Brain Gym® movements refer to the original 26 Brain Gym movements developed by educator and reading specialist Dr. Paul E. Dennison and his wife and colleague, Gail E. Dennison.
These Brain Gym® activities activate muscles directly related to the integration of the motor cortex of the frontal lobes as well as the cerebellum and basal ganglion. They recall the movements naturally done during the first years of life when learning to coordinate the eyes, ears, hands, and whole body – our physical skills. They are just the ‘tip of the iceberg’ of the whole Brain Gym program, which is a movement-based program for learning with ease. Clients, teachers, and students have been reporting for over 20 years on the effectiveness of these simple activities. These movements often bring about dramatic improvements in areas such as:
- Concentration
- Memory
- Focus
- Academics: reading, writing, math, test taking
- Physical coordination
- Relationships
- Self-responsibility
- Organization skills
- Attitude
